One of the most unusual items we have seen offered. Manufactured by the New England Pat, Fire Escape Co. The Spencer fire escape, basically an oversized line throwing device made so one could shoot a line over a building allowing the trapped residents to pull a rope ladder to them for a life saving escape. The case contains the hemp and wood ladder and the arrows that the line is attached to. A box of 25 brass cartridges for launching the projectiles and of course the single shot line throwing device. The gun itself appears to be an Austrian military single shot modified commercially for this use. It is japanned black on barrel and breech for corrosion resistance and the stock appears to be of Beech. Housed in a wooden storage/transit case with detailed instruction affixed to the interior of the lid. We have observed many line throwers and harpoon guns but have never seen a fire rescue device such as this. Good condition overall and very aesthetically appealing. The wood stock of the gun is dry but excellent with a few minor bruises from storage and several minor scratches but no material loss. The barrel and breech have retained generous amounts of the black finish with about 40% having flaked away leaving the balance a chocolate patina. The bore is fair with evidence of corrosion and pitting. Action is fine and functions properly. The transit case is fair as it has been rather weathered and suffers from some cracking and scuffs. Intact and serviceable; it has a good eye appeal. The cartridges are all empty but the spent brass cases and empty box remain. The two arrows are fine with good leather gas seals. The string spindles are very good but they are missing the white cotton string. Hemp and wood ladder is very good but should be oiled for preservation. Truly a unique item and not likely to be seen again in the near future.
