Between 1900 and 1901 approximately 4,600 Colt Model 1878 double action revolvers were manufactured for the U.S. Military for use in the Philippines. Their distinguishing characteristics include the 6" barrel instead of 5-1/2", oversized trigger guard with elongated trigger and "U.S." PROPERTY" markings to include "RAC" stamp for Renaldo Carr on left side of frame; right side of frame stamped "US", dated 1902 and stamped "JTT" for John Thompson; back of cylinder is stamped "RAC" for Carr and matching serial number. These revolvers came standard with Colt factory high polish blue finish, Colt logo black composite grips and lanyard ring. This revolver has obviously seen very little use, retaining 85% of the original Colt factory finish with backstrap turning grey patina, some thinning on front strap and trigger guard, thinning at muzzle and side of barrel and thinning on cylinder flats. Generous Nitre blue on back of hammer and grip screw. Near mint grips. Action functions correctly. Strong rifling.
