There were 1,011 of these early bolt action mechanism rifles made in 1871 at Springfield. This was one of the earliest bolt action rifles that was put into service by the U.S. government. Finished in the white, except for action, which was case colored. Barrel not proofmarked and features a folding adjustable rear sight and front bayonet lug / sight on top of muzzle. Cartridge was loaded directly into breech and mechanism is self cocking with closing of bolt. Side of action stamped with Springfield eagle and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD 1871", top of bolt stamped "WAR. BURTON. PATENT./DEC. 20, 1859. FEB. 21, 1871." Steel triggerguard with sling swivel and buttplate stamped "U.S." Walnut stock stamped with clear inspector cartouches "ESA" for Erskine S. Allin and "JWK" for John W. Keene. Complete with Springfield Model 1868 type cleaning rod. Very good condition, steel surfaces bright with yellowed oil on surfaces. Action retains traces of case colors in protected areas and has excellent markings. Strong bore with some freckling and strong action. Stock with some scattered stains and marks from use. A very nice example of this rare martial trial rifle.
