Circa 1770. English short sword has a curved steel blade with double fullers. Gilt brass hilt with four slots, engraved lined knuckle guard and a lion's head pommel with capstan. Horn grip with bulbous turnings, wrapped with a spiraled copper band with a gilt brass ferrule at the front. For an example with an nearly identical hilt, see figure 139.S on page 108 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. CONDITION: Particularly fine example, retaining nearly all of the original gilt finish on the hilt with only some light edge wear and scattered marks. Grip is excellent and blade is very good with dark brown patina and some minor freckling.
