Carbine length barrel with two line new Haven address, carbine front sight and folding carbine rear sight. Case colored receiver hammer, lever and crescent buttplate. Mounted with XXX highly figured crotch walnut stocks checkered in the "H" pattern with pistol grip, rubber grip cap and case colored crescent buttplate. Assembly No. 702 is found on left lower tang as well as stock mortise and buttplate. This special order deluxe carbine is fully documented with a early Winchester Gun Museum letter dated October 25 1968 and signed by T.E.Hall curator. The letter states that the model 1886, serial No. 106401 was shipped as a carbine in caliber .45-90 with fancy checked wood stock, pistol grip, and rifle butt. Further that it was shipped August 24th, 1895. Winchester special order carbines are very uncommon and highly sought after. This well documented example is one of the desirable calibers and configurations. This coupled with the fine overall original condition with over 90% original factory applied blue finish remaining on barrel and magazine. The loss of finish is at muzzle and magazine end with slight thinning of finish on barrel top from light use. The case colored receiver retains over 60% of the vivid case colors with silvering and loss contained at balance point and left side of receiver towards front. The highly figured piano finish stocks are very fine with slight bruising and several very minor imperfections found on buttstock. No material loss is evident just very typical light period scratches. Checkering remains good and sharp with very light wear at points. Buttplate is slightly silvered at heel but retains vivid colors else wear. Bore is excellent with sharp rifling. Mechanics are crisp and in proper order. Truly a fine antique deluxe special order Winchester. From the collection of Ray Bentley.
