Plain half stock American rifle made by J. Henry & Sons fitting the profile of the rifles offered to the Indian nation at Fort Laramie in 1868 as a result of a treaty action with the United States government. Octagonal rifled barrel with sights, top flat stamped "J. HENRY & SON." German silver blade front sight and iron buckhorn rear sight. Barrel fitted with an iron ramrod rib with two iron tubes. Flat percussion lockplate stamped "J. HENRY/& SON", double set triggers. Walnut half stock is plain and without decoration. Iron furniture, German silver wedge escutcheons on forearm and endcap. Hickory ramrod. Many rifles like this were purchased by the U.S. Government as a treaty offering in 1868 and distributed as a result of the successful treaty signed at Ft. Laramie in 1868. Fair condition, all iron parts have a heavy dark brown patina with scattered freckling and marks from use, stock has scattered period repairs, cracks and shows wear and heavy use, consistent with Indian use. Barrel markings partially visible.
