Lot contains: (A) Carte de Visite of a full length Union officer wearing sword and holding a Henry rifle. Reverse backmarked "Metropolitan/ Photograph Gallery/ 53 College Street/ Nashville, Tenn/ J.H. Van Stravoren/ Proprietor", and inked "Captain Fahnestock"(sp) . On June 27, 1864 at Kennesaw Mountain, the 86th Illinois, having been outmaneuvered by the Confederates was ordered to retreat. Lt. Colonel Fahnestock ordered his men to fall back while passing his Henry rifle to Fife Major Webber (the same rifle pictured in the accompanying CDV copy), along with instructions to fire every bullet as quickly as possible at the Confederates who were pinning them down while the regiment dug entrenchments. Fife Major Webber stood his ground from 9am to 6pm using Fahnestock's Henry rifle to keep the Confederates occupied. Webber was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions that day. CONDITION: Very good, light foxing with the lower margin trimmed. (B) GAR reunion badge from the 86th Illinois, Peoria, August 26-27, 1910, featuring an image of Col. A.L. Fahnestock. CONDITION: Very good condition.
