Griffin & Howe Springfield short rifles and carbines are relatively scarce and quite desirable. This very fine, mostly original example from 1929 has round barrel, slimmed and tapered from the original government barrel, and enhanced with sleeved-on sling loop and front sight base, which has knurled sight protector over gold Lyman bead. Top of barrel is engraved "No. 910 Griffin & Howe, Inc. NEW YORK." Caliber is at left rear. Standard military Springfield action has had receiver ring stippled and rear tang slimmed and shaped. Griffin & Howe side mount and Lyman 48 receiver sight have been installed. Bolt, extractor, follower, and right action runway have been damascened. Bolt knob has had bottom flattened and checkered with another checkered panel on top of knob. Military trigger and bottom metal have been retained, front portion of floorplate checkered. Nicely marbled European walnut stock features classic pre-war Griffin & Howe styling with Whelen shadow line right hand cheekpiece, diamond grip with fluted transitions to flats of sides, horn forend tip, steel grip cap, and classic point pattern checkering wrapping around forend and at grip. A vacant silver oval and sling eye are on toe line. Stock measures 13-3/4" to checkered and engraved steel buttplate with trap. Rifle is mounted with Zeiss Zielklein 2-1/2x scope with post and crosshair reticle in patent applied for Griffin & Howe mount and rings with single lever. Numbers on slide and base match.Excellent, original condition. Barrel and action retain over 95% original blue showing silvering on high edges. Blue on bottom metal rates about 80%. Silvering on trigger guard bow, and on edges of floorplate. Stock retains nearly all it original carefully hand rubbed oil finish, with numerous marks and scratches, some fairly deep, especially on right side of butt. Checkering is very lightly worn, and has not been cleaned or re-run. Scope shows considerable finish loss, and rates probably 70%, still optically clear. Bore is excellent with sharp rifling throughout. Action is smooth. A superb early classic Griffin & Howe carbine. Weight with Scope: 8 lbs. 4 oz. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection. CORRECTION: Included are two Griffin & Howe scope pamphlets that picture two similar rifles.
