David F. Clarke inspected 1880 manufacture Colt Cavalry Model with blue and case colored finish and walnut grips. You will find matching numbers on the barrel, frame and trigger guard. The "DFC" mark can be found on the barrel, frame and cylinder, but the cylinder is numbered 4860. Walnut grips have inspector stamp, the 1880 date and "DFC" stamps at bottom but are more contemporary replacements. The barrel retains approximately 50% original factory blue blending with grey patina and some brown age patches near sight. Housing retains approximately 80% blue. Cylinder retains approximately 75% blue. Frame screws retain generous amounts of fire blue. Frame retains approximately 75% case colors, some brilliant, balance patterned out. Trigger guard retains approximately 85% of the period arsenal reapplied blue. Backstrap has approximately 75% of the bright blue. The hammer is a period correct replacement, retaining virtually all of the case colors. Indexes and locks up like new. Fine, near mint bore. This would be considered a partial restoration. Well-done, very handsome example of an Indian Wars Cavalry Colt. According to the factory letter, this gun was once a part of the Mel Tormé collection. Serial No. 55048 was shipped on April 21st, 1880 as part of 150 gun shipment to the United States Government with standard finish. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection. CORRECTION: This Colt Cavalry is not matching as previously listed. The backstrap is numbered to another revolver. The grips are masterful reproductions.
