The No. 2 was the highest quality bolt rifle normally available from Jeffery, and was very popular due to its pleasing and exceptionally well executed engraving. This fine rifle has tapered round barrel mounted with sleeved-on island base holding one standing, three folding leaf, as well as folding adjustable ladder sighted out to 1000 yards. Sleeved-on front ramp holds silver bead, and is fitted with Jeffery's proprietary sight protector. A sling loop is soldered to bottom of barrel. Top of barrel is engraved "W. J. Jeffery & Co Ltd King Street St. James' London 23561". Rear portion with some scroll engraving has Quality Steel trademark and London nitro proofs for 300 grain bullet. Standard length Model 98 Mauser action has been opened up to accept this cartridge which is based on the .404. Receiver ring and bridge are engraved with well cut, unique to this model, large sprays of acanthus scroll. Bolt has classic commercial Mauser pear-shaped knob, flag safety is gold inlaid "SAFE". Bolt stop is of unique tall section. Three shot bottom metal (no drop) has hinged floorplate retained by button in trigger guard bow. Metal is engraved with fine acanthus shaded scroll matching that on receiver ring. Trigger is of original single pull type. Lightly streaked, dense European walnut stock measures 14" over checkered steel buttplate with trap (cleaning rod in trap). Stock features slim classic styling with horn tip, point pattern checkering and a sling loop on toe line. Composition grip cap is inset with vacant silver oval. Excellent, as refinished. Metal parts retain nearly all of a professional re-blue, engraving somewhat softened. Stock has old hand rubbed oil finish, over some light marks, with a few subsequent. Bore is excellent. Action is smooth. Weight: 8 lbs 10 oz. A fine British classic in a highly regarded caliber, with ballistics the goal in the development of the .333 OKH. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection.
