The two major Edinburgh rifle makers of the late 19th century were Daniel Fraser and Alexander Henry. Fraser apprenticed under Henry and the two often collaborated. This is undoubtedly a third quality rifle by Alexander Henry, but it bears no Henry markings or patent use numbers. It does have Daniel Fraser's Leith Street Terrace, Edinburgh address on top flat of its 27" tapered ovate barrel. Remainder of top flat is file cut. A single standing, one folding leaf express rear sight is dovetailed through. Front sight is a silver bead. Case hardened action is fitted with cranked right hand peninsula lock having tall serpentine round bodied non-rebounding hammer and back sliding safety. Action is unengraved except for "Daniel Fraser & Co" on lockplate. Rifle is London proofed. Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Attractive, nicely marbled and broadly fiddle figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/8" over checkered steel buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip, and a sling eye, matching that soldered to bottom of barrel, is on toe line. One piece matching forend attaches to barrel with transverse pin. Excellent as completely and competently refinished. Barrel retains approximately 95% re-brown, with some subsequent silvering and marks. Action and lock retain over 95% London quality new case hardening colors. Screws and safety have new temper blue. Stocks are nicely refinished in oil over some marks, and with some subsequent marks, including a fairly deep scratch on left side running from forend across action and into left side panel of butt. Metford rifled bore is very fine, shiny, deeply frosted toward breech end. Lock is crisp. Safety engages at half cock. Weight: 7 lbs 3 oz. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection.
