The barrel markings "E. Remington and Sons Ilion, New York" date from 1880 to 1889. Has the early style case colored forearm cap as seen on page 14 in the book Remingtons No. 3 Hepburn by Tom Rowe. Has the checkering pattern on page 16 top left of pistol grip. The caliber is stamped under the barrel "38.1 - 3/4". The Hepburn patent mark as on page 18 can be found on the left side of frame. No. 2 barrel with a diameter of 15/16". Has a single set trigger. The caliber .38 1 - 3/4 became the 38-40 Remington Cartridge in 1886. It has the rounded sporting rifle buttplate as seen on page 30. This is a sporting rifle No. 3, not a match. The 38 1-3/4 special was a mid-range cartridge that was first manufactured in 1879 with a straight 1-34" case with the bullet weighing 245 grains. Sports a hooded wind gauge front sight with open bead and rear sight filler. The long range tang sight can be found on page 378 lower left. Listed as a long verier sight. The rifle remains in near new condition inside and out. Retains 98%+ original factory blue on barrel, brilliant case colors on all areas of frame, and nitre blue breech block, beautiful walnut stocks with checkered pistol grip, case colored buttplate that retains 60% of original case colors. Flawless wood to metal fit. Legends are sharp. Action Like new with a strong near mint bore. It would be nearly impossible to find a finer No. 3 sporting rifle with long range sight. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection.
