The .35 Whelen cartridge was actually designed by J. V. Howe in the early '20's and gained considerable popularity. Sedgley began making sporting rifles in the late '20's. This example has tapered barrel with banded-on front ramp with gold bead sight under slip-on, knurled protector. Top of barrel is engraved "R. F. SEDGLEY INC. PHILA. PA. U.S.A." Left rear is engraved "35 HOWE - WHELEN" and has circled "S" proof. Double heat treated Springfield action has had G&H side mount and Lyman 48 receiver sight installed. Bolt has been altered for low scope clearance, pear-shaped handle installed. (no Sedgley number on bolt). Bolt shroud has had low scope safety installed which is marked "Mark II". Military bottom metal has been retained. American walnut stock measures 13-7/8" over Neidner type checkered steel buttplate with trap. Trap holds staff for receiver sight (blank presently installed). Stock features right hand shadow line cheekpiece, point pattern checkering, reinforcing bolt, ebony forend tip, steel grip cap, and sling eyes. Rifle is fitted with Leupold Alaskan 2.5 X scope with duplex reticle in G&H slide and rings. Excellent, appears to be near new. Metal parts retain essentially all custom rust blue finish. Stocks have oil finish, possibly refreshed with oil in checkering, with a few light subsequent marks. Bore is very fine with some light frosting. Scope is excellent. Weight with scope: 9 lbs 4 oz.
