Medium weight round barrel with sleeved-on sling eye and front ramp, having silver bead and front sight protector, is engraved "No 2128 Griffin & Howe Inc. New York". Caliber is engraved at breech end. Early post war FN solid sidewall Mauser action has had receiver ring stippled, Griffin & Howe scope side mount, and Lyman 57 receiver sight installed. Bolt, extractor, follower, and right rail have been engine turned. A low scope safety has been installed. Bolt handle is checkered in five teardrop shaped panels. Bottom metal with hinged floorplate retained by button in trigger guard bow, has had bow slimmed and tapered. Floorplate is engraved with triangles of well cut shaded scroll surrounding gold inlaid monogram, "MEW". This is most likely the work of Joseph Fugger, who apprenticed under Kornbrath, and was responsible for most of Griffin & Howe work through the '50's and '60's. Stock of nicely figured American walnut features classic '50's Griffin & Howe styling with swept shadow line right hand cheekpiece, horn forend tip, and point pattern wraparound checkering with mullered borders. This rifle measures 14" over checkered steel buttplate with trap. Staff for receiver sight is under trap. Stock also features steel grip cap, sling eye, and vacant silver oval on toe line. Zeiss Diavari - C 3-9 scope with duplex reticle is in Griffin & Howe slide and rings. Excellent. Barrel and action retain over 95% original blue with high edge wear and silvering at bolt knob. Bottom metal retains over 90% blue, silvered mostly on floorplate from normal hand wear. Stocks retain nearly all of their original oil finish, quite dry, over scattered marks and a few light dents. Checkering is slightly worn, beginning to darken. Bore is excellent. Action is smooth. Relatively new scope is excellent, optically sharp. Weight with scope: 9 lbs. 4 oz. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection.
