Single shot game guns by London makers are quite scarce. This well made example made around 1908 has plain round barrel engraved "William Evans (From Purdey's) 63 Pall Mall, St. James's. London" on top in front of octagonal breech section. Bottom of barrel is stamped with London nitro proofs for 2-1/2" chambers. Case hardened action is nicely filed, and features automatic safety and bushed striker. Action is engraved with 60% coverage well cut scroll. "William Evans" is on each side. Lightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-5/8" over serrated wood butt. Flat top point pattern checkering is at grip. A vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching splinter forend with horn tip has friction release. Gun is accompanied by a new gold canvas case with leather corners, lined in burgundy cloth. Reproduction William Evans label is in lid. Case contains cleaning equipment, snap caps, round oil bottle, and consignors notes. Excellent as partially refinished. Barrel retains nearly all of what appears to be its original blue. Action retains approximately 70% original case hardening color. Floorplate, top lever, trigger plate, and trigger guard re-blued. Stocks retain most of their original finish with added oil. Checkering with some added oil, has not been re-cut. Bore is excellent. Action is tight. Case is near new inside and out, as are the accessories. A snappy little field gun. From the G.
