According to "Gunmakers of London: 1350 - 1850" by Howard L. Blackmore, John Barton was listed as a gunmaker at 14 Haymarket St. between 1803 and 1816 and then at 5 St. James St. between 1816 and 1819. Previously, he was partnered with Wogdon. These diminutive pistols feature round removable steel barrels, two superposed on each pistol and numbered to each breech. One pistol with barrels and actions numbered 1 and 2, the other numbered 3 and 4. The breeches are engraved with roped borders. Bottoms of actions have two English proofs on each pistol. The scalloped boxlock tap-actions feature sliding half-cock thumb safeties with a pin to secure the frizzen shut. The left sides are engraved with "LONDON" in ovals, surrounded by drums and cannons. Tap action levers on left sides. Right sides are marked "I/ BARTON" in ovals and surrounded by cannon balls and instruments. Fine detailed borders engraved around all panels and on cocks and frizzens, engraved folding hidden triggers. One piece checkered walnut grips with vacant silver oval wrist escutcheons. Complete with mahogany and oak case with green felt-lined partitioned interior. Case has brass corners and a vacant brass escutcheon on the mahogany lid, as well as a round brass keyhole escutcheon on front. Interior with two lidded compartments and accessories including: a brass bullet mold, a wooden and brass ramrod with turned handle, a steel screwdriver/barrel removal combination tool with engraved acanthus border, an oiler, a copper and brass powder flask, extra lead balls and flints, and case key. Pistols are in excellent condition and retain an original polished finish, showing little to no wear. Crisp engraving and markings, actions function perfectly and are strong, and barrels are still easily removable. Grips excellent with sharp checkering and only a few light storage marks on checkering. Case very good with some scattered marks on lid and minor scuffs, interior with some minor staining and light wear. Accessories excellent. A very fine and well made English pair of tap-action pistols in fantastic condition! From the G. Thomas Puett Collection.
