Circa 1882, this high quality shotgun was actually built by W. W. Greener on an early Anson & Deeley patent (use number 3077) action under license from Westley Richards and was at the cutting edge of shotgun development for its day. It has high quality stub Damascus barrels engraved "Winchester Repeating Arms Co New Haven Conn. U.S.A. (Anson & Deeley's Patent Hammerless)" on concave game rib with crossbolt extension. Barrel flats and bottoms of barrels are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs and "NOT FOR BALL", choke markings. Case hardened action with automatic safety, crossbolt third fastener, and double triggers has "A&D" patent information on water table and W. W. Greener patent stamp on breech face. Action is engraved with near full coverage nicely cut closed scroll with floral highlights. Steel trigger guard with pair of dogs watching birds flush on bow, has serial number on tang. Nicely streaked and figured European walnut round knob pistol grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/16" over checkered horn buttplate and features diamond drop points and point pattern checkering at grip. A gold shield engraved with monogram "N E" (?) is on toe line. Matching splinter forend with shaped metal tip has roller spring friction release. Good condition. Barrels retain most of a well done re-brown with very fine definition to interesting pattern. Engraving on rib softened and washed (hard to read). Action is mostly gray brown, unpitted, and quite dirty. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original finish, with numerous knocks and marks. Buttplate has considerable insect damage. Checkering worn. Bores are fair to good with scattered pitting throughout, cleaned, and have a good shine. Action is slightly loose. Barrels are off face. Many collectors have never seen an example of this incredibly rare high quality Winchester offering.
