The serial number on this smoothbore shotgun surpasses known numbers and would have been a special order with parts on hand shotgun. According to Madis, page 290, the single shot was made as a 20 bore as early as 1887. Most shotguns are found in the 110000 to 115000 serial range. Only the 20 bore was offered. Catalog states "The gun is made with 26" 20 gauge full choke nickel steel barrel chambered for shells 3" and under. It has a straight grips tock and forend of plain walnut, and fitted with a rubber buttplate. The receiver is matted on top along the line of sight.". This is a takedown with High Wall receiver and blued finish with case colored block and hammer. Barrel retains approximately 90% or better original blue. Frame retains 99% of the period reapplied blued finish. Stocks are excellent and proud to metal. Excellent case colors on hammer and block. Colors have faded on lever. Action is fine. Near mint, shiny bore. These High Wall shotguns saw very limited production and few orders. This one was made from parts clean-up special order only and as such, is one of the harder Winchester to locate. These are seldom encountered at guns shows and is one of the rarities of the High Wall line.
