The frame on this revolver was built in 1874, pre-Custer. As was the norm with the Cavalry revolver recall and refurbishing at the turn of the century, the barrels were shortened to 5-1/2" and various parts from Cavalry revolvers were disassembled and reassembled using the reusable parts and subsequently reissued, mostly for use in the Philippines. This revolver has the following parts: barrel serial No. 1527 "RAC" inspected (Renaldo Carr), trigger guard No. 132926 "K" inspected, backstrap No. 116690, cylinder "RAC" inspected. Left walnut grips shows no signs of cartouche. Right side of grip is dated 1903 and has the script cartouche "RAC". This revolver has seen light duty since reissue. The frame has the two line patent date with a sharp "US". Screws retain generous amounts of Nitre blue. Barrel retains approximately 75% of the bright high polish factory blue. 40% case colors on left side of frame and 45% on right side, some brilliant. Decent colors on hammer. Backstrap is basically grey patina as is trigger guard, but possibly 20% total in all. Grips are very good to excellent, slightly shy to metal. Cylinder retains 35-40% blue, balance silver. Very fine Artillery U.S. rebuild with pre-Custer frame that indexes and locks up like new. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection. CORRECTION: Factory Letter states serial No. 9859 was shipped on August 21st, 1903 to the United States Government commanding officer, Springfield, Massachusetts as a standard blue and case colored .45 caliber in a 317 gun shipment.
