Sterling silver plaque measuring 11" by 15" mounted on an oak panel which measures 15-3/4" by 19-3/4". The silver plaque is extensively engraved with patriotic motifs, The National Capital, Mt Vernon, Arlington House, soldiers, and the dates 1861-5 and 1892. Reading in raised relief: "Washington/ To The G.A.R. Greeting/ The Citizens of Washington/ cordially invite the Veterans of the Grand/ Army of the Republic to hold their annual en-/ campment for 1892 at the National Capital, assuring them/ of hearty welcome and attractive entertainment in a/ city rich with historic memories of the war./ Through the Commissioners of the District of Columbia/ they tender the freedom of the/city, the/ key of which accompanies this/ invitation." Also in relief is a list of Civil War battles, a list of Commissioners of the District of Columbia and the Executive Committee members. The Grand Army of the Republic did hold their encampment in Washington D.C. in 1892. CONDITION: The finely detailed silver work is in excellent condition but does show one small scuff.
