Finding another Model 1842 musket in this condition would be nearly impossible, as this example retains about 98% factory original bright polished surfaces and the stock retains nearly all of the original finish. This musket features tapered round barrel, breech marked "V / P / (eagles head)", a small "T" on the left side and dated 1853 on the tang. Bayonet lug is mounted on the bottom near muzzle. Flat percussion lockplate with beveled edges, center stamped with eagle and "US" and tang marked "SPRING / FIELD / 1858". Standard polished steel Model 1842 furniture. Buttplate tang stamped "US". The trigger still retains its fired blued finish. Oil finished walnut stock with crisp inspector's cartouche on left side behind sideplate, stamped "JS" for James Stillman. Complete with original polished steel ramrod and correct U.S. marked Model 1842 triangular socket bayonet. Markings on steel components and stock are excellent and crisp. The mechanism is as new and the bore is excellent. There are a few light scattered storage marks and a few minor dents on stock from storage. Bayonet is excellent and nearly new, consistent with the condition of the musket. From the Jim Linton Collection.
