This example features a round, rifled, bright steel barrel with blued two leaf rear sight and faceted breech dated 1859 on top, left side stamped "V / P/ (eagles head)". Flat percussion lockplate with beveled edges and Maynard primer door stamped with large patriotic eagle, tail dated 1859 and front tang stamped "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". Standard polished steel Model 1855 furniture, buttplate tang stamped with large "US". Partially figured walnut stock stamped on left side with inspector's cartouche "JS" for James Stillman. Complete with original steel ramrod and triangular bladed socket bayonet stamped "US". Very good condition overall, bore is excellent and shiny and mechanism is crisp and functions well. Barrel and lock markings are excellent. All steel components have been lightly cleaned and have a bright surface with some yellowing and areas of light grey freckling. Some components have a few light, scattered storage marks. Stock very good with some high edge wear and scattered marks from use, cartouche is legible. Bayonet is excellent and has light grey freckling throughout. This is a very nice example in excellent overall condition of a desirable Civil War Musket. From the Jim Linton Collection.
