This fine example features a round rifled barrel with bayonet lug/front sight mounted on top near muzzle and blued two leaf rear sight. Faceted breech stamped "1863" on top and left side stamped "V / P / (eagle's head)". Flat case hardened percussion lockplate dated 1863 at tail, stamped "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" and with a large eagle in center, bolster stamped with an eagle. Standard Model 1861 steel furniture with most components stamped with small inspector stamps, blued trigger. Buttplate tang is also stamped "US". Plain walnut stock stamped on left side with crisp cartouches; "ESA" for inspector Erskin S. Allin and "WPT" for William P. Taylor. Complete with original steel ramrod and U.S. marked triangular socket bayonet. Retains most of original polish with some areas of grey freckling and a few scattered storage marks. Bore is excellent and shiny. Lock mechanism is crisp and strong, retains almost all of original case colors with some grey freckling and fading. Rear sight has traces of blue, other side turned to brown, buttplate has a light grey freckling patina with some spotting. Stock is very good with some edge wear, oil stains and scattered marked. Bayonet retains a bright surface with some scattered freckling and spotting. Markings are excellent overall and inspectors' cartouches are strong. A must have for any Springfield collector. From the Jim Linton Collection.
