Boss, always touted as being a maker of "best" guns only, produced boxlock guns during the early 1900's which are marked with the Robertson name. This unusual completely Boss marked boxlock gun has dovetailed steel barrels engraved "Boss & Co St. James St London (S.W.)" on slightly swamped game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs and later London nitro re-proofs for 2-1/2" chambers. Serial number is hand stamped on rear lump. Boxlock action features automatic safety and double triggers, and is engraved with 80% coverage well cut shaded scroll surrounding "BOSS & CO" in ribands on each side. Top lever, floorplate, and trigger guard are blued. SN is hand stamped on trigger guard tang. Lightly streaked European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 - 7/8" over checkered wood butt on 3/4" extension. Classic point pattern checkering is at grip, and a vacant German silver shield is on toe line. Matching splinter Baker ejector forend has inset horn tip and Deeley release. Relatively new green canvas case with leather corners is lined in green felt, and appears to have an original Boss, Cork Street label in lid. Case contains pair of John Dickson marked snap caps, and a leather hand guard. Good, as partially refinished. Barrels retain nearly all of a good quality re-black. Action is mostly pewter gray with some silver highlights, other parts re-blued. Engraving softened. Stocks retain nearly all of an old light refinish over numerous marks, checkering re-cut. Bores are very fine with a few scattered pits and light striations. It appears that a very slight bulge has been tapped down approximately 12" back from muzzle on right barrel, before re- proof. Action is tight, rear lump peaned. Ejectors are in time. Case is close to new. Label is foxed and has rubs.
