Alexander Martin of Glasgow was known for finishing guns with a Scottish theme. Barrels engraved with makers name and addresses on slightly swamped game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 1 - 1/8 ounce and Birmingham re-proofs also for 2 - 1/2" along with "SLEEVED". Coin finished boxlock action features automatic safety, pivoting third fastener and double triggers. Action is engraved with 80% coverage nicely cut shaded scroll surrounding "ALEXr MARTIN" on each side. Fences are deeply relief carved with thistle blossoms and leaves. Top lever, floorplate, trigger plate, and trigger guard are blued and also scroll engraved. Alex Martin guns are known to have nice wood; this gun has very attractive, well streaked, and nicely stump figured European walnut straight grip buttstock which measures 15 - 1/8" over checkered wood butt. Stock also features traditional drop points, point pattern checkering at grip, and a silver oval on toe line engraved with initials "J. A. D". Matching splinter highly regarded Baker ejector forend has Anson release. Gun is accompanied by tan canvas covered leather trimmed case which is lined in scarlet cloth, and has John Dickson & Son paper label in lid. Case contains cleaning equipment, pair of Purdey snap caps, crystal oil bottle, hand guard, and an old John Dickson & Son trade card. Initials on outside of case match those on silver oval. Fine, as refurbished. Barrels retain nearly all of a re-blue, most likely done at time of sleeving. Rib engraving considerably washed. Action is cleaned to coin finish, engraving still clear. Other parts re-blued, retaining most of that blue, engraving softened. Stocks retain nearly all of an old refinish with a number of subsequent marks. Checkering re-cut. Bores are excellent. Action is somewhat loose. Barrels are off face. Ejectors are in time. Case exterior is fine, straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is fine. Label is foxed and slightly soiled. Accessories are fine.
