There were about 160,000 made between 1879 and 1885. Blued rifled steel barrel with "V/P" and eagle head proof near breech. Casehardened breech block is stamped "U.S. MODEL 1873". Flat blued lockplate is stamped with a large eagle and "U.S. SPRINGFIELD.". Has an 1873 rear sight, two blued barrel bands, cleaning rod, and serrated trigger. Walnut stock has a "S.W.P. 1884" cartouche for inspector Sam Porter and encircled "P" behind triggerguard tang. Fire blue on retainer springs. Fine blue on barrel bands and furniture. Retains almost all of original blued and casehardened finishes, appears unissued. Stock is excellent with a few light storage marks, one deep gouge below lockplate, excellent cartouche. Fine action. Strong, clean, near mint bore. A very high condition 1879 Trapdoor complete with excellent blued U.S. marked triangular socket bayonet, scabbard and leather frog. From the Jim Linton Collection.
