The National Arms Company of Brooklyn, New York patented the No. 1 and No. 2 pistol in 1861 and 1863; a pioneer on the field of heavy caliber breech loading pistols firing metallic cartridges. In 1870 Colt bought out National Arms Company and brought many of National's workmen to Hartford, where they carried on production of the No. 1 and No. 2 Models until supply was finally exhausted. This is a Colt's marked No. 1 which was basically a National Arms Company No. 1 Deringer which was a single shot, pivot, spur trigger, all metal pistol. Approximately 6,500 of these were manufactured between 1870 and 1890. Both the First and Second Model were sold simultaneously with iron frame. First Model ran from 1 to 6500. There is light factory engraving on both frame and barrel and the gun was completely plated by the factory. This pistol has matching numbers. Retains 95% original plating on frame and approximately 75% on barrel with the balance simply flaked to blending grey metal. Rifling is strong and pistol is in perfect working order. It is housed in a small period case lined in green velvet with four original cartridges. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection.
