The factory letter lists Model 1892 serial No. 11038 as a being shipped on December 7th, 1893 as a .44 caliber rifle with octagon barrel, plain trigger, fancy checkered stock and $10 engraving. Comes with a full octagon barrel with full magazine tube. Forearm cap all blued with engraving. Receiver engraved in the Style 9, fancy American feather crotch wood in the style H pattern that wraps around the bottom of the stock to the opposite side. Wood checkering pattern can be found on page 229-230. While work is not signed, the primary Winchester engravers during the 1892 period was John Ulrich, address not listed, 1887 to 1901; page 133. All the page listings come from the book "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson. Comes with a case colored hammer, lever, blued trigger and a blued buttplate. Forearm is of matching fancy grained wood with the H style checkered pattern. A fantastic Model '92 that is factory engraved is extremely rare. This one would be difficult to improve upon, it is just an exceptional engraved '92. The full oct bbl retains 96-97% blue with few surface discolorations near the forend cap and razor sharp edges and legends. The mag tube retains 96-97% soft blue. Mag tube guide ring is of a 97% bright blue. Nose cap is 95% bright blue with engraving around the screw heads and border. Left side of receiver retains 98% org blue with all screw heads looking as though none have been turned with orig finish. Right side retains 96-97% orig blue with the loading gate retaining 70% orig nitre blue. Stock is of feather crotch grain with 3X wood. Left side of receiver features the antlered game fighting scene panel, balance is dot and scroll with decorated borders. Sides of lever and hammer retain 90% case colors. Assembly No. 18 can be found on tang, stock channel and buttplate. Lower tang also has XXX to indicated grain of wood. All matching numbers. Left side of stock has some light impressions. Right side of the stock also with light impression. No chips of wood are missing, no cracks around the upper or lower tang or toe of buttplate. Wood is proud to metal, never sanded or refinished. Razor sharp checkering. An extremely rare gun with factory letter to indicate that all options are correct. Bore exhibits sharp lands, shiny grooves, mirror finish, no abrasion and only a hint of frosting. Cycles properly, mechanics are fine. This is one amazing combination: it is a first year production, caliber .44-40 with extra finish XXX stocks that feature lovely flame pattern; engraving on receiver is nearly full coverage. This rifle would be a highlight in any Winchester collection.
