Long two-stage 13-3/8” tapered barrels in .58 caliber smoothbore. Flat beveled banana lock with cock repaired at neck during period of use. Lock engraved in center “CHATEAU/A MAYENNE”. Varnished walnut stock with early relief carving around barrel tang, around entry ferrule, around lock, side plate, and trigger guard. Early brass furniture, trigger guard with relief urn with acanthus leaves at finial above a face, butt cap displays a bust of a Roman soldier against a stippled background, and side plate engraved with a boar’s head surrounded by polearms and flags. Wrist escutcheon with Roman soldier’s head against a stippled ground with acanthus leaf below and whimsical face above. Very good, dark even brown patina on barrel and lock, small repair on left side of breech. Brass with unpolished patina, stock dark and has some minor age cracks on forend and a few scattered marks from use. A fine example of an early 18th century officer’s pistol.
