This rifle recently came from a home in Reading, Pennsylvania. It is fresh to the market and has not been photographed or studied previously. The rifle features an octagonal barrel with front sights mounted on top. The flat lockplate is unmarked and features a roller frizzen. Plain brass furniture includes a four-piece patchbox in the style typically attributed to Wolfgang Haga and a typical Berks County, Pennsylvania sideplate with beveled edges. Trigger guard has a wide bow and wrist has a silver oval escutcheon inscribed "JF", silver Moravian star inlaid above cheekpiece. Highly figured full-length maple stock of classic Berks County form and relief carved with designs around the entry ferrule, barrel tang, lock, and sideplate. Carved on left side of buttstock, both in front of and behind the cheekpiece with leaf designs and scrolls. Left side of wrist, in front of patchbox, is engraved with incised scrolls. CONDITION: Very good, as found. Showing little use with crisp deep carving and sharp edges overall. Lock and barrel retain a spotted brown patina with much original polish still visible. Lock is in original flintlock configuration and is crisp. Bore has very deep lands and grooves and shows little use. Brass retains a dark, unpolished patina and has sharp edges, showing little wear and a few scattered dark spots and storage marks. Stock is excellent with no damage or restoration, carving shows little to no wear. Only a few scattered minor scuffs and storage marks. Silver retains a heavy dark patina. Patchbox lid has been replaced, but matches perfectly and is not detectable. This is in extraordinary condition and is a great fresh to the market Golden Age rifle.
