It is estimated that a total of 9,728 Model 1876 carbines were manufactured. Only one of 3,100 carbines have a non-standard barrel and only a few are recorded in the factory records as being shipped with sporting sights. The Winchester factory letter verifies the sights and caliber and lists this carbine as being shipped on September 7th, 1892; but a letter from Gael Oswalt at the Cody Museum states 2,378 carbines shipped in this caliber. In addition there is an unsigned letter stating the carbine was specifically milled to accept sporting sights and is 1/4" longer than the 22" standard carbine length. Standard features include full round barrel, standard sporting sights, single barrel band, walnut nearly full-length forend and carbine butt with no trapdoor. Left side of rifle has saddle ring and stud. CONDITION: All metal is basically a gun metal grey patina with age freckling overall. Rear sight was manufactured by Freunds and is dated June 29th, 1880. All factory legends are sharp. Wood is excellent, proud to metal with original finish, never sanded, and with usual bumps and bruises. Fine action. Bore has well-defined lands and clean grooves with light ring approximately 1" from muzzle. No visible bulge.
