Circa 1830 to 1840. OL: 58". BL: 43 - 1/2". TB: Octagonal. LM: Percussion. PB: 4-piece. S: Plain maple. Unsigned but attributed to T. Allison. School: Western Pennsylvania. 3 brass inlays and 1 silver. This Kentucky rifle resembles “T. Allison’s“ work, especially the elaborately pierced and engraved patchbox which fills the entire right-hand side of the stock. Of special note, there is a silver inlay of crossed cavalry sabers between the upper end of the finial and the lock panel itself. A large “half-moon” brass inlay fills the cheekpiece and there is a scalloped and engraved sideplate. There is a wood repair (1/2” W x 14” L) which is on the left-hand side of the stock. It meets the new replaced forestock at the junction of the rear ramrod ferrule; the upper ferrules as well as the rear ferrule are replacements, as is the nose-cap. Overall, this rifle with its elaborate workmanship in metal is worthy of a better finish and repair.
