1815 to 1830. OL: 51". BL: 35". TB: Octagonal. LM: Percussion. PB: 4-piece. S: Curly maple. Unsigned. Maker: Jacob Earnest. School: Westmoreland. Incised carving. This Kentucky rifle, with a replaced percussion lock and upper forestock, is obviously made by Jacob Earnest of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. It has his typically pierced, pointed finial patchbox, sideplate and triggerguard. The incised carving, while simple in pattern, is reflective of his work. The upper 16 - ½” of forestock are replaced and the barrel has been shortened in period. There is a wrist break as well as patches of wood beneath the lockplate cavity.
