Circa 1780 to 1800. OL: 51". BL: 35". TB: Octagonal to round. LM: Percussion. PB: None. S: Walnut. Relief carving. 1 brass inlay and 1 silver inlay. This European single barrel shotgun is a plain but very pleasing piece. Although it has lost approximately 3” on the forend, the rest of the walnut stock still has its original finish. Originally, the gun was made as a flintlock, but was converted to percussion. However, the converting gunsmith utilized the original hammer and the frizzen spring. The brass mounts are well engraved and the only piece missing is the rear ramrod ferrule and probably a horn nose-cap. There is some nicely executed relief carving behind the barrel tang as well as behind the cheekpiece. The thumb piece has a diamond shaped piece of onyx (or ebony) inlaid with a silver wire floral motif. Both sling swivels are still intact.
