OL: 57". BL: 41 - 1/2". TB: Octagonal. LM: Percussion. PB: 4-piece. S: Curly maple. School: Bedford County. This Bedford County Kentucky rifle although unornamented, has the beautiful, graceful lines normally seen on these later rifles from the Bedford area. The classic Bedford County style lock has the initials “W. D” for William Defibaugh and the lock with its unique appearance and very sculptured classic percussion hammer adds much to this piece. However, the brass four-piece patchbox is from an earlier York County rifle such as M-Fry or F. Zorger. This patchbox was added later to embellish the gun which started life without a patchbox. Since this was done, it could be corrected by removing this patchbox associated with Defibaugh’s work. This new patchbox should have documented information either on the lid or on the underside of the lid.
