"The Doomed Ship". James G. Tyler (American, 1855 to 1931). Signed "James G. Tyler" at lower right. Emotionally charged painting of a terrific shipwreck. This is an extremely complex work by this artist, whose subjects were primarily single ships in the forefront of a calm sea. This particular painting would be considered a fully developed nautical disaster scene by Tyler, which is highly unusual within the artist’s oeuvre. Notice the upside down flag pulled taught by the whipping wind- the broken mast and the wretched crew as they struggle to save their vessel; one can literally feel the ocean spray coming off this painting. The hovering gulls in the background foretell a potentially ominous ending for this crew- had our painter not included his own safe point of view from the nearby sandy shore.
