GEORGE KNAAK SIDELOCK AND BLITZ ACTION VIERLING 4511 8X57 X 8X57 CAL X 16 X 16 GA MODERN Cal. 8x57 x 8x57 (.319 groove diameters) x 16 x 16 ga. 2-1/2" Chambers. 25-1/2" Krupp steel bbls have top rifle bbl within broad flat matted rib mounted with one standing, one folding rear and silver bead front sights. Shotgun bbls are stamped "nitro" and "16/1". Bottom bbl is stamped with nitro proofs for steel jacketed bullet at 10 grams and 7.7 x 57. Unusual sidelock action with rifle bbls being fired by Blitz system, and shotgun bbls by sidelocks, features rifle/ shotgun selector on top tang. Greener type safety is mounted in tail of left sidelock. Pin type rifle cocking indicators are on top of action. Raised rib tumbler end cocking indicators are on sidelocks. Both triggers are set. Action is engraved with near full coverage well cut germanic scrolling acanthus with shaded background. Sidelocks are semi-relief engraved with game scenes, backgrounds deeply cut away; a roebuck and two does are in meadowland on left lockplate, with a pair of ducks taking flight from marsh. Two bugling stags are challenging each other in alpine setting on right, as two hinds look on. A semi-relief rabbit scampers across trigger guard bow. Nicely streaked and lightly figured, dark and dense, European walnut sunburst horn capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14" over ribbed horn buttplate, and features a classic shadow line right hand cheekpiece, and point pattern checkering with line borders. A sling eye as well as a large cartridge trap holding four rifle cartridges, cover engraved with acanthus and a roebuck, is on toe line. Matching splinter forend has Deeley release. Shotgun bbls: Bore diameter: left -.674, right -.674. Bore restrictions: left -.026 (full), right -.025 (full). Wall thickness: left -.030, right -.027. Drop at heel: approx 2-3/4", drop at comb: approx 1-3/4". Weight: 8 lbs 8 oz. LOP: 14”. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain most, perhaps 70 - 80% of their orig blue with scattered rubs, marks, and scratches, as well as some light freckling. Action retains most of its coin finish with a few dark spots. Thumbpiece of top lever is silvered. Stocks retain most of their orig hand rubbed oil finish with numerous light marks and scratches, with a few fairly deep, checkering worn. Top rifle bore is fine with some light frosting. Bottom rifle bore is very good, strong rifling throughout, lightly pitted. Shotgun bores are excellent, shiny, with a few scattered light dents. Action has just a hint of looseness, mostly lateral. Set triggers work. This cataloger has never seen another vierling in this configuration, and only one or two other sidelocks. This fairly robust gun balances and handles quite well. 49224-4 MGM56 (12,000-17,000)
