HOLLAND & HOLLAND ROYAL HAMMERLESS DANGEROUS GAME DOUBLE RIFLE WITH AMMUNITION AND CASE.H&HSXS DBL RIFLE19180.500/465MODERN(ca 1907) Cal. 500/465 Nitro. This fine rifle is one of the first made in this caliber necessitated by the ban on .450 caliber rifles in India and the Sudan. 26" Chopper lump bbls are fitted with matted quarter rib, holding one standing, two folding leaf express rear sight and front ramp holding silver bead and flip-up night bead. Transitions of quarter rib and front ramp are filed in typical H&H manner. Tops of bbls are engraved "Holland & Holland. 98. New Bond Street, London." and "Winners of All the "Field" Rifle Trials, London." Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 465 express, 75 grains cordite, and 480 grain bullet. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN and Whitworth steel sheaf of wheat trademarks. A sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Sidelock action with top tang extending over comb, features automatic safety, hidden third fastener, bushed strikers, gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, and dbl triggers (front checkered and articulated). Brazier back locks are fitted with Holland''s patented hand detachable pin. Action is engraved in typical Holland Royal style with near full coverage well cut, varying sized, shaded scroll, surrounding "Holland & Holland" in arched device on each lockplate. Bottom of action is engraved "CHARGE" "75 Grains cordite" "500/465" "Case 3-1/4 Inches". Fences are engraved with scroll and acanthus with floral highlights. Trigger guard with scroll on bow has SN at grip, which extends to engraved steel trap cap. Nicely marbled and broadly fiddle figured European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/8" over Silver type pad. Stock is finished in classic H&H style with shadow line right hand cheekpiece, drop points, and point pattern checkering at grip, with mullered borders and inward curving rear line. A sling loop, matching that on bbls, is on toe line. Matching splinter forend has pivoting lever release. Drop at heel: approx 2-1/2", drop at comb: approx 1-13/16". Weight: 10 lbs 14 oz. LOP: 14-1/8". Makers oak and leather case with brass corners and central medallion, is lined in scarlet cloth, and has gold embossed H&H black leather label in lid, along with instruction notice and charge card for 500/ 465 express rifle no. "28210". Bottom compartment is separated by dust flap, and contains case straps, pair of snap caps, H&H marked round oil bottle, and a well made cotton web and leather sling marked "H&H". Also included are two plastic boxes from Superior Ammunition containing 27 empty, and 3 loaded cartridges, with HDS head stamps. CONDITION: Fine as refurbished. Bbls retain nearly all of a satin re-black. Action is cleaned to silver gray with some areas of scattered light pitting, mostly at juncture of forend iron to wood. Well made and shaped replacement stocks retain nearly all of their hand rubbed oil finish. Bores are good, with strong rifling, frosted in grooves. Action is very slightly loose. Bbls are a bit off face. Case leather is darkening, with many scuffs, marks, and stains. Handle is good, a bit tender. Interior cloth is fine with many compressions and soiling. A classic Holland rifle, simply in need of a new hinge pin to make it ready for any big game. 49417-23 MGM364 (45,000-65,000)
