W. J. JEFFERY MODEL 1 SIDELOCK EJECTOR DANGEROUS GAME DOUBLE RIFLE WITH CASE.W. J. JEFFERYSXS DBL RIFLE28871450-400 3-1/4MODERNCal. 450-400 3-1/4 Made in 1927, this fine top quality rifle has 24" chopper lump bbls fitted with quarter rib holding one standing, two folding leaf express rear sight with platinum lines marked for 100, 200, and 300 yards. Quarter rib transitions to sunken mid rib which transitions to stippled front ramp holding silver bead with flip-up porcelain night bead. Tops of bbls are engraved "W. J. Jeffery & Co. Ltd" and "9. Golden Square. Regent Street. London. W. 1." Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 60 grains cordite, 400 grain bullet, and unusual 3-1/4" case. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SNs, and actual makers (probably Leonard) production no. 2686 is on bottom rib. Case hardened action fitted with pinless sidelocks, is stocked to the fences, and features non-automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), large dolls head with sliding bite third fastener, bushed strikers, and dbl triggers. Action is engraved with near full coverage nicely cut, large, open, shaded scroll with smaller scroll borders. Fences are nicely carved in serpentine form, and action beads are well filed and unengraved. "W. J. JEFFERY & Co Ltd" is on each lockplate. Blued top lever, forend iron, and trigger guard are also scroll engraved. SN is on trigger guard tang which extends to steel grip cap with trap. Top of trap is engraved in shell motif. Well marbled and lightly fiddle figured European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/4" over Silver pad, and features standard drop points and point pattern checkering at grip, with sling loop on toe line, matching that on bottom of bbl, which also has inlet silver oval engraved with "W". Matching splinter Southgate ejector forend has Anson release. Drop at heel: approx 2-3/8", drop at comb: approx 1-3/4". Weight: 10 lbs 7 oz. LOP: 14-1/4". High quality leather case with brass corners, is embossed "W. B. W" on top. Case is lined in dark burgundy cloth and has gold embossed red Jeffery label in lid. Case contains 2-pc Parker Hale rifle cleaning rod with mop, brush, and jag, pair of snap caps, Jeffery marked square oil bottle, and two horn handled turnscrews. Also included is a high quality leather carrying sling and two red and yellow boxes of Kynoch 450-400 3-1/4 cartridges. PROVENANCE: Wm West Estate Collection. CONDITION: Excellent, as refurbished, most likely by factory. Bbls retain essentially all of a London quality re-black. Action retains traces of case hardening color where protected. Renewed blue of other parts shows a hint of silvering. Stocks show some light marks under new finish, with a few scattered subsequent marks. Checkering competently re-cut. Bores are extremely fine, sharp, strong rifling throughout. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are slightly out of time. New case leather is excellent with a few scuffs. Straps and handle are very fine. Interior cloth has some light rubs and marks. Accessories are excellent, near new. A wonderfully balanced top quality rifle in a caliber renowned for its versatility. 49479-1 MGM279 (30,000-50,000)
