FINE EARLY JOHN DICKSON ROUND ACTION EJECTOR GAME GUN WITH MAKERS CASE. JOHN DICKSON ROUND ACTION EJECTOR GAME GUN 4712 12 GA. (1894) Cal. 12 ga. 2-1/2" Chambers. 28-1/2" (per factory records) Three stripe Damascus bbls are fitted with narrow, concave game rib, which is engraved "John Dickson & Son 63 Princes Street Edinburgh" and "2". (Factory records indicate gun was made to pair with gun no. 4680.) Bbl flats are stamped with London black powder proofs, makers initials, SN, and "PATENT". Bottoms of bbls are each stamped "CHOKE". Classic case hardened, lightweight, round, trigger plate action features automatic safety (SAFE gold inlaid), pin type cocking indicators, and pivoting third fastener engaging bbl rib extension. There is a fine cock bead around fences at transition to bbls, as found on many early Dickson guns. Water table is stamped with SN and "J.D & S" patent use number "509". Action is engraved with nearly full coverage very well cut small shaded scroll. "JOHN DICKSON & SON PATENT" is in scrolled riband on each side. No. "2" is engraved on blued top lever. Blued and scroll engraved trigger guard has SN on tang which extends to horn grip cap. Striking, boldly fiddle figured and lightly streaked European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/2" over coarsely checkered wood butt. Point pattern checkering with mullered borders is at grip, and a gold oval monogrammed "SN" is on toe line. Matching splinter forend has no. "2" inlet in silver in central diamond of checkering, and has Anson release. Bore diameter: left -.724, right -.728. Bore restrictions: left -.019 (Lt mod), right -.005 (IC). Wall thickness: left -.017 (3" area near top rib, otherwise mostly .021), right -.022. Drop at heel: 2-1/8", drop at comb: 1-7/16". Weight: 6 lbs 1 oz. LOP: 14-1/2". Makers, most likely orig, leather case with stitched leather corners, is embossed "J.O.L.G." on top, and is lined in what was once purple velvet, now considerably browned. Gold embossed purple leather Dickson label with roaring lion is in lid. Case contains unmarked crystal oil bottle, Parker reproduction plated oil bottle, brass choke gauge, and a bone striker case. CONDITION: Excellent. Bbls retain over 90% of a well done re-brown with fine definition to interesting Damascus pattern. Action retains a considerable amount of its orig case hardening color with some areas fairly strong where protected. Top lever and trigger guard retain about half of what appears to be their orig bright blue. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their orig oil finish, worn through at grip and forend from normal handling wear, with some added oil over light marks and scratches, checkering moderately worn, engraving on gold oval appears new. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Case leather is very dark with numerous light and heavy marks and scuffs. Straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is fair, and as mentioned before, faded to brown. Label is very fine, with a few small chips. Partitions show some alteration. Accessories are fine. A classic early lightweight Dickson round action with great dimensions. 1098-2 mgm3 (12,000-18,000)
