RARE SMITH & WESSON PRE-WAR REGISTERED MAGNUM DA REVOLVER WITH BOX.SMITH & WESSONREG MAGNUM49742.357 MAGNUMMODERN; C&RCal. 357 Magnum. Blue finish with 8-3/4" ribbed bbl, partridge front sight with McGivern bead front sight and adjustable rear sight in the rnd top frame. Top of rib & top strap are nicely checkered. Frame is 5-screw type with standard trigger and hammer that has fine checkered spur and serrated sides. Mounted with large silver medallion, diamond checkered Magna grips, matching numbered to this revolver. Rear face of cyl and inside ejector housing are marked with matching SN. Inside the crane, frame is marked "REG 1670". Accompanied by an orig royal blue & gold, Chinese red inside, 2-pc cardboard box which contains, what appears to be orig wax paper and a brass cleaning rod. Also accompanying is a 2-page Smith & Wesson factory letter which identifies this revolver as a pre-WWII Registered Magnum in cal 357 Magnum, registration number 1670, shipped Nov. 24, 1936 to "The Palace, 220 Main St., Kalispell, MT". It was shipped with 8-3/4" bbl and Sheard gold bead front sight, walnut grips with grip adapters attached, now missing. Additionally accompanied by a Smith & Wesson owners pamphlet for the Magnum revolver which pictures the long barreled revolver and the grip adapter. It is also accompanied by a 1936 Smith & Wesson, 80th Anniversary catalog. This is the model of revolver touted by the renowned author and Magnum Guru, Elmer Keith. This was Smith & Wesson''s finest double action revolver. PROVENANCE: Larry Baer Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine, all matching. Overall retains 96-97% strong, orig factory blue with only faint muzzle edge wear and very faint sharp edge wear. Grips are crisp, showing only light diamond point wear. Mechanics are crisp. Brilliant shiny bore. Has been fired, but not a lot. Box has a break in one side and shows corner & edge wear with some missing surface paper on one side. It also has evidence of old tape having been removed. Interior is bright & clean. Catalog, cleaning rod & owners pamphlet are bright & clean. 49427-11 JR (5,000-8,000)
