EXCEPTIONALLY FINE AND RARE 16 GAUGE REMINGTON 1894 EE GRADE SHOTGUN WITH ORIGINAL L O'' M CASE.REMINGTONSXS 1894 EE13914616 GaMODERN(ca 1910) Cal. 16 ga. 2-9/16" Chambers. This scarce, small bore, top-of-the-line Remington has 28" fine 3-blade Damascus bbls with broad, matted, concave rib. Tops of bbls are engraved "Remington Arms Co. Ilion, N.Y., U.S.A." Bbl flats are stamped with SN. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with code "CDXP". Bottom of lump is stamped with patterning numbers "300" and "235". Splinter is nicely polished. Case hardened action features automatic safety, Remington''s patented third fastener, and dbl triggers. Water table is stamped with patent info, SN and grade. Action is engraved in late "E" style with near full coverage nicely cut large scroll with some geometric borders and interesting shell motif on fences. This well done scroll is background to vignettes of dogs and game birds with dog scenes in slight relief; a setter is at central portion of left side of action, with small scene of woodcock to rear, and a pointer is on right with quail to rear. Trigger plate has two scenes; large central circular scene is of two ducks erupting from marsh, with smaller scene toward front of a spaniel retrieving a duck. "REMINGTON ARMS CO" is in arched banner above each dog scene. Scroll engraved top lever and trigger guard are blued. SN is on trigger guard tang. Very attractive, well marbled, and fiddle figured European walnut horn capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14" over ribbed horn buttplate with widows peak. Side panels are checkered with very closely spaced diamonds, and with cupid''s bow border toward action. Classic Remington arrowhead drop points have extra filed in flutes. Checkering at grip has fancy border at forepart, with closer spaced flourishes of checkering at top portion with fancy portions extending toward butt, with ribbons separating it from coarser checkering. A gold oval on toe line is engraved with fancy monogram "BT" (which matches plaque on case). Matching splinter ejector forend has Remington''s adaptation of an Anson release. Checkering has finely spaced heart and diamond shaped panels separated from coarser checkering with uncheckered ribbons. This gun is also fitted with what appear to be factory original, sling loops with front screwed to bottom rib and rear installed behind gold oval on toe line. Bore diameter: left -.667, right -.667. Bore restrictions: left -.023 (Imod), right -.013 (mod). Wall thickness: left -.032, right -.026. Drop at heel: 3-1/16", drop at comb: 1-5/8". Weight: 6 lbs 14 oz. LOP: 14". Gun is accompanied by its orig Remington supplied tan leather leg o'' mutton case with end cap stamped "12", "K", and "F". A brass rectangle on right side is engraved "Benjamin Torres" matching "BT" monogram on stock. PROVENANCE: Double Gun Journal Summer 1998 with article featuring this gun "EE Remington From Mexico" by Charles Semmer, describing and picturing this gun and its case. Article is signed by Charles Semmer. The Estate of B. E. "Andy" Anderson. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. Bbls retain 95 - 98% orig Damascus finish, with excellent definition to pattern, and some light silvering of sharp edges. Action retains approx 95% orig case hardening color, silvered slightly and with some light flecks of oxidation on bottom edge, with more silvering on edges of fences and rear of top tang. Thumbpiece of top lever is slightly silvered, as are edges of trigger guard bow. Stocks are excellent, retaining essentially all of their orig rubbed oil finish with raised grain, clean checkering, and only a few light handling marks. Horn of grip cap and buttplate is excellent, bright and shiny with no noted damage. Case hardening color on forend tip and iron is also excellent. Bores are excellent. Action is tight and crisp. Ejectors are strong and in time. Case leather is very fine, with a few rubs and some spotting and water stain. End flap has been reattached. Other stitching is coming loose. An exceptionally rare (estimated only 3 "EE''s" known in 16 ga), high orig condition, investment quality Remington double. 49530-1 MGM296 (35,000-55,000)
