FINE HIGH CONDITION 16 GAUGE A. H. FOX CE GRADE. A. H. FOX SXS 303321 16 GA MODERN Cal. 16 GA 28” Chromox bbls with slightly raised, matted, concave rib are engraved with steel info and Savage Arms name and address on tops. Breech ends have 1-1/2” triangles of simple scroll engraving. Bbl flats with engine turning on side ribs and cocking slide, are stamped with SN, grade, and Savage proof. Small frame Fox case hardened action features automatic safety and dbl triggers. Action is engraved in standard “C” pattern with 50 – 60% coverage scroll, surrounding game scenes on sides; a pair of quail on left, and snipe on right. “ANSLEY H. FOX” is above each scene. Bottom of action portrays a setter within a circle. Blued trigger guard has vacant scrolled riband on bow, and SN at grip. Nicely fiddle figured European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-5/16” over ribbed composition buttplate. Side panels and grip are checkered, and have sgl line borders. Matching splinter ejector forend has small inlet ebony tip, and Deeley type release. Bore diameter: left -.657, right -.658. Bore restrictions: left -.028 (full), right -.009 (IC). Wall thickness: left -.030, right -.029. Drop at heel: 2-7/8", drop at comb: 1-5/8". Weight: 6 lbs 0 oz. LOP: 14-5/16". PROVENANCE: Griffin & Howe letter stating that this shotgun was entered into inventory on Aug 3 1931, and was sold on Oct 14 1931 to W. Lee White. Along with copies of ledger page and synopsis of the life and accomplishments of Mr. White, lawyer and banker, who is believed to be the orig purchaser of this shotgun. CONDITION: Excellent plus, original, as found. Bbls retain over 95% orig blue with some light marks, thinning at muzzles, and along sides from normal handling wear. Action retains 75 – 80% bright orig case hardening color, pleasingly silvered on bottom, sharp edges, and sides of fences. Thumbpiece and trigger guard edges are somewhat silvered. Stocks retain nearly all of what appears to be their orig finish with some light marks, possibly with added oil on forend, checkering lightly worn. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Ejectors are strong and in time. A hard gun to find in high condition, Michael McIntosh estimates a total of 305 “C” grades were made in 16 ga. 49402-1 MGM217 (15,000-25,000)
