RARE SPECIAL ORDER ENGRAVED DELUXE MODEL 1897 MARLIN LEVER ACTION RIFLE.MARLIN189735406222MODERN; C&RCal. 22. Beautiful ’97 with special order 26” oct to rnd bbl ,half magazine, German silver Rocky Mountain front sight, V-notch rear sight and locking Lyman combination tang sight. Mounted with spectacular, center crotch American walnut with F-style checkering and serpentine grip with semi-crescent smooth steel buttplate. Receiver is engraved by Conrad Ulrich in #3 style which consists of the large oval vignette of a running whitetail buck being chase by a wolf on the left side and a standing white tail buck in a small rnd vignette on the right side all surrounded by foliate arabesque patterns and multiple borders. Engraving extends over top and bottom of receiver, top tang, forend cap and about 1” over top 3 flats of bbl. Buttstock is matching numbered to this rifle, buttplate is unnumbered. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum worksheet which shows this rifle as a blank in the records. Frequently, a blank in the records indicates that it may have been intended as a presentation or special order for an important person. Pictured on pages 238-9 of Col. Brophy''s book on Marlins. CONDITION: Very fine+, all matching. Bbl retains about 93-95% orig blue with some thin spots on the left side, about mid-point. Magazine tube retains about 98% orig blue. Receiver and hammer retain most of their orig strong case colors, brighter in sheltered areas. Lever is mostly faded case colors and buttplate may be properly restored blue. Wood is sound and retains a fine restored finish. Mechanics are fine. Bright shiny bore. 49121-12 JR (15,000-25,000)
