UNSIGNED (American School, Mid 19th Century) TERRAPIN TOWER, HORSESHOE FALLS Oil on chamfered wood panel Housed in a black and gold painted molded wood frame Unsigned NOTE: Terrapin Tower was owned by the Porter brothers from 1816 to 1885. They set up a toll gate on a bridge to Goat island and on a group of rocks they erected a viewing tower with a 300 foot long plank walkway from Goat island to 10 feet beyond the crest line of Horseshoe Falls. They collected 25 cents from each person crossing the bridge. It was in 1829 the tower was built. Admission was an additional 10 cents. In 1872 the tower was blown up with plans for a new tower which were never executed. SIZE: 17-1/2" x 24". Ocerall 20-1/4" x 26-1/2" PROVENANCE: From a Downeast Maine Home CONDITION: Very good with some digs and blemishes to surface. Sliver of top left corner edge missing. On verso of panel it has been whitewashed which obscures some writing and under black light the date "1856" is seen. 48842-12 (1,200-1,800) WAG0
