RARE AND FINE 1ST EDITION, 1ST ISSUE NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS BY GEORGE CATLIN.Two volumes octavo. Over 500 pages, 3 maps and 309 illustrations from Catlin''s original paintings on 177 plates. This very popular set of books was published numerous times after this original 1841 London 1st edition. This set is in fine condition; 3/4 calf binding with marbled boards. Spines have raised ribs with gilt title and decorations. Catlin traveled throughout the Great Plains from 1830 to 1836 and produced more than 500 paintings and sketchings based on his travels. Catlin''s association with General William Clark, former leader of the Lewis and Clark expedition and Governor of Missouri, led him to the west. Here he wandered, virtually alone and painted some 48 Indian tribes. Often one of the first whites to encounter the tribe, he lived with them and recorded their daily life and secret ceremonies. This is his most important literary work and a foundation work of Western Americana. The original pieces of art were exhibited in the United States and Europe starting in 1837 culminating in his best known books which we are offering here. SIZE: CONDITION: Fine and tight with minor soiling on front of volume 2. Some rubbing and scuffing to high areas of bindings. Wear and reductions especially to corners and top and bottom edges of spine. Hinges are tight; insignificant yellowing and foxing. Book plates are found inside front covers of each book "William Barwick Hodge" 1802-1882. William Barwick Hodge, a noted actuary and statistician. 49129-2 JS (2,500-3,500)
