PAIR OF CAST IRON GARDEN BENCHES.Probably New York, 19th century, possibly as early as 1850. These Rococo style benches were produced by several American foundries and are of the earliest American ornamental garden furniture. A pair of these are in the rose garden of the White House. See "Comstock American Furniture", p. 663, figure 659 for discussion of a similar example with history of manufacture in Cold Spring, New York. These are very appealing rococo Chippendale forms with foliate crestings, sides and seats with horseshoe form backs and graceful cabriole legs with rocaille legs. SIZE: 35-1/2" t x 43-1/2" w x 20-1/2" d. 17" h (seat height). CONDITION: Good condition with historic accumulation of white paint and old crack to rear corner of one seat casting. 49379-14 DH (1,200-1,800)
