IMPORTANT CHINESE TRADE PORTRAIT OF A HONG MERCHANT OF THE THIRD RANK.Oil on linen. By an unknown 19th century Chinese artist. The three quarter portrait shows a bald headed man with mustache wearing a gray/black robe with blue collar, a rank badge at chest. His red hat with blue ball sets to his right. Housed in a 19th century carved wood frame. SIZE: 33-1/2" h x 25-1/2" w. Overall 40-3/4" h x 33-1/4" w. PROVENANCE: Exhibited at the Museum of The American China Trade, Milton, MA in 1977 (Incoming loan receipt accompanies lot). Also accompanying the lot are two letters for insuring the painting, one from Orrin Colley, 1978, and Roland Hammond, 1984. CONDITION: The surface with an all over spider webbed craquelure, otherwise canvas is very good. 49074-1 AW (2,500-3,500)
