JAPANESE KATANA SIGNED "KANE HIRA" IN FINE LACQUER SCABBARD. This ancient Japanese sword is in polish with cutting edge measuring 29-1/2" with blade and tang overall about 39". Two character signature translates "KANE HIRA" who is from Beizen Provence, though this signature is most likely "Gemei" (fake signature). It was common in ancient Japan for a secondary maker to sign the name of the master as a business maneuver such that his swords may sell better. This sword is still quite ancient though probably not dating from the 12th century as Kane Hira. Sword handle is mounted with umbrella and fan minuke and a fine pierced iron fighting suba with gold decoration. Blade is in polish showing temper but with numerous kizus throughout length. Sword presents beautifully in its black/silver lacquer scabbard. SIZE: CONDITION: Very good to fine as described in description with several large chips of lacquer near throat. New cord wrap and added scabbard mounting ring. 48546-1 (3,000-5,000) JS0
