EARLY STYLE WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 SADDLE RING CARBINE.WINCHESTER1886 SRC2858145-70Cal. 45-70. Standard grade carbine with 22" bbl, full magazine, barleycorn front sight and 1873 marked carbine ladder rear sight. Left side of receiver has a stud & ring. Mounted with uncheckered, straight grain American walnut with full length forearm that has steel forend cap & single band. Buttstock has straight grip with carbine buttplate. Accompanied by a Cody Firearm''s Museum letter which identifies this carbine in Cal. 45-70, received in warehouse Jan 5, 1889 and shipped two days later with 49 other arms to order number 16656. This is one of the last of the full stock carbines as by the 28,000 serial range the lighter standard forearm was in general use on the 1886. While the 1886 carbine, with its heavier more powerful cartridge was not as popular as its predecessor, the Model 1873, it was available in a full range of calibers with the 45-70 the most popular. These carbines usually saw very hard service on the American frontier and are rarely found today with high orig finish. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. "Bill" Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains about 90% plummy blue with light wear spots and a couple of small nicks. Receiver retains traces of case colors turned silver, being an overall frosty blue/grey patina. Wood is sound with a few light storage & handling marks and retains most of a fine professionally restored finish. Mechanics are crisp.
